drkrm. was founded by JOHN MATKOWSKY, a cinematographer, photographer, graphic artist and web designer who has had a long reputation as a fine art black and white printer for many diverse and renowned photographers.  His list of clients includes Maureen Lambray, Phil Stern, Howard Bingham, Kenny Rogers, Lucy Lui, Barbet Schroder and Jim French as well as the artists Cathy Opie, Jo Ann Callis and David Hockney. John has also printed editions from the original negatives of Edward Curtis and Stanislav Szukalski and work for institutions and agencies like Rogers & Cowan, Mattel, The Getty and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In 1982, after studying photography and film at the Philly Community College and majoring in film at Temple U., MATKOWSKY moved to Los Angeles. Soon after his arrival on the West Coast, he met and was mentored by Tom Consilvio, the founder of Silver Lab, where over the years MATKOWSKY learned the finesse of the fine artistic print while working on the images of Gary Winograd and William Claxton.

After Silver Lab’s demise in 2005, MATKOWSKY mortgaged his home to start drkrm. where he continues the tradition of fine art printing. The black & white lab is dedicated to the highest quality of hand processing, fine printing, and digital services, serving top photography professionals as well as the student and hobbyist while offering the ultimate in personal customer service.

drkrm. Gallery is also an exhibition space dedicated to fine art photography, cutting edge and alternative photographic processes and the display and survey of popular cultural images. drkrm. Gallery is fast becoming a destination for both film buffs and collectors of fine art photography.
